In the late 1970s, two young American zoologists ventured into one of the most remote and inhospitable places on Earth: the Kalahari Desert of Botswana. With little more than determination and a battered Land Rover, they established a research camp in an area where no humans had lived for thousands of years, dedicating themselves to studying the region's magnificent but little-known lions, brown hyenas, and other wildlife.
This is their extraordinary account of survival and scientific discovery in one of Africa's last true wildernesses. Facing drought, equipment failures, dangerous animals, and complete isolation, they persevered through seven years of groundbreaking research whilst living in conditions most would consider impossible. Their intimate observations reveal the complex social lives of desert predators and offer a passionate testament to the urgent need for conservation.
