About Outdoor Books

Outdoor Books exists to help people who spend time outdoors choose what to read next. Amazon will tell you what exists. We are trying to be useful about what is worth reading.

The site is for two kinds of reader, who usually arrive wanting quite different things: somebody planning a trip and looking for the right guidebook or map, and somebody looking for a good read — travel writing, nature writing, mountaineering, memoir.

Where the catalogue comes from

The catalogue is built from publisher and retailer data. The description on a book page is the publisher's own copy. That is useful for telling you what a book is, who wrote it and when it came out, but it is marketing material, and we do not dress it up as our opinion.

What we actually do

We do not review books, and we do not claim to. What we do is sort them: decide which category a book really belongs in, group books that suit the same trip or the same kind of reader, and put the useful ones where you can find them.

That is the work — a book about walking the Camino should be findable by someone planning to walk the Camino, and should sit alongside the others worth considering. Getting that right is more useful to you than another paragraph of opinion.

What "featured" means

Where a book appears in a featured position or a themed collection, that is a judgement about what belongs there — not a statement that somebody here has read it. Nothing on this site is presented as a review.

How we make money

Links to buy books are affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. That is disclosed beside every buying link rather than buried in the terms, and it plays no part in what appears on the site or in what order. See our Editorial Policy.
