A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush
In 1956 Eric Newby, then working in the London fashion trade, sent his friend Hugh Carless, a diplomat, a telegram asking if he fancied a trip to Nuristan, a remote part of Afghanistan. Neither man was an experienced climber. After a short practice session in Wales, they set off for the Hindu Kush.

About the book
A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush, first published in 1958, describes their attempt on the 20,000ft Mir Samir and their trek through Nuristan, beginning in the Panjshir valley. Much of its humour comes from the two men's bickering and from phrases lifted from an antique grammar book. It is the book that made Newby's name as a travel writer, and it is still widely read as a classic of the genre.
