Originally published between 1948 and 1971, the New Naturalist monographs ran parallel to the main series, focusing on single species or related groups rather than broad natural history subjects. These shorter volumes maintained the same exacting standards as the main series and featured the same stunning, distinctive cover illustrations by artists Clifford and Rosemary Ellis that helped inspire an entire generation of nature enthusiasts.

This edition has been produced from an original copy, preserving John Buxton's detailed study of one of Britain's most attractive summer visitors.
