About the book
Schaller's aim was to study the bharal, or Himalayan blue sheep. Matthiessen hoped to catch sight of the elusive snow leopard, and was also drawn to Tibetan Buddhism.
The Snow Leopard, published in 1978, is his account of that journey on foot, west of Annapurna and north along the Kali Gandaki to Shey Gompa in inner Dolpo. It reads partly as an expedition log, with notes on altitude, weather and wildlife, and partly as a private reckoning with grief and spiritual questions. It suits readers of mountain travel and nature writing who like their adventure reflective.
